The Packed Bed Scrubber, or Packed Tower, is designed to improve contact between two phases in a chemical process by having one or more beds of solid packing material. Packing offers the advantage of a lower pressure drop across the tower, which is beneficial while operating under vacuum. Differently shaped packing materials have different surface areas, which creates a void space between the packing that allows for absorption of gases and vapors. The combination of packing material, packing design, depth of packing, bed velocity, and the scrubbing liquid chemistry and quantity, are the factors that affect packing performance.

The purpose of a packed bed is typically to remove gaseous or vaporous pollutants from an air stream. To achieve this, the tower is filled with specially designed packing material, which are arranged or stacked to a specified depth (creating a stacked packed column). In the tower, the scrubbing liquids tend to wet the surface of the packing and when the polluted gas stream pass across this wetted surface, the pollutants get absorbed following the chemical reaction. Some vapors can be simply removed by condensation through the cooling effect of the circulating liquid. The cleaned air is then discharged to the atmosphere and the contaminated scrubbing liquor is either disposed of in an approved manner or chemically treated and recycled. In some cases, the collected contaminants can be recovered and reused in the original or other processes.

The packed bed (or packed tower) scrubber is capable of only limited particulate matter control, and they easily choke with high solids loadings in the gas stream.

    Wet scrubber refers to a variety of devices that remove pollutants, particulate matters and gases, from polluted gas streams. In a wet scrubber, the polluted gas stream is brought into contact with the scrubbing liquid, by spraying it with the liquid, by forcing it through a pool of liquid, or by some other contact method, so as to remove the pollutants.

    Scrubbers can be designed to collect particulate matter and/or gaseous pollutants. The versatility of wet scrubbers allows them to be built in numerous configurations, all designed to provide good contact between the liquid and polluted gas stream. Wet scrubbers remove dust particles by capturing them in liquid droplets. The droplets are then collected, the liquid dissolving or absorbing the pollutant gases. Any droplets that are in the scrubber inlet gas must be separated from the outlet gas stream by means of another device referred to as a mist eliminator or entrainment separator (these terms are interchangeable). Also, the resultant scrubbing liquid must be treated prior to any ultimate discharge or being reused in the plant.

    A wet scrubber's ability to collect small particles is often directly proportional to the power input into the scrubber. Low energy devices such as spray towers are used to collect particles larger than 5 micrometers. To obtain high efficiency removal of 1 micrometer (or less) particles generally requires high energy devices such as venturi scrubbers. Additionally, a properly designed and operated entrainment separator or mist eliminator is important to achieve high removal efficiencies. The greater the number of liquid droplets that are not captured by the mist eliminator the higher the potential emission levels.

    Wet scrubbers that remove gaseous pollutants are referred to as absorbers. Good gas-to-liquid contact is essential to obtain high removal efficiencies in absorbers. A number of wet scrubber designs are used to remove gaseous pollutants, with the packed tower and the plate tower being the most common.

    If the gas stream contains both particle matter and gases, wet scrubbers are generally the only single air pollution control device that can remove both pollutants. Wet scrubbers can achieve high removal efficiencies for either particles or gases and, in some instances, can achieve high removal efficiency for both pollutants in the same system. However, in many cases, the best operating conditions for particles collection are the poorest for gas removal.

    In general, obtaining high simultaneous gas and particulate removal efficiencies requires that one of them be easily collected (i.e., that the gases are very soluble in the liquid or that the particles are large and readily captured) or by the use of a scrubbing reagent such as lime or sodium hydroxide.

    Venturi Scrubbers have the highest particle collection efficiency of any wet scrubbing system which can reduce the contamination level of flue gas up to 99%. A Venturi scrubber consists of three sections: a converging section, a throat section, and a diverging section. Their open construction enables them to remove most particles without plugging or scalding. The inlet gas stream enters the converging section and, as the area decreases, gas velocity increases. Particle and gas removal occur in the throat section as the inlet gas stream mixes with the fog of tiny liquid droplets. The ability of Venturis to handle large inlet volumes at high temperatures makes them very attractive to many industries. For use in industries with high corrosive gas emissions, high-grade stainless steel such as SS-316 is used for the construction of a Venturi scrubber. Our system capacity ranges from 1000 CMH to 200000 CMH. The running cost of our systems is depended on the application and capacity.     In the initial stage of scrubbing, the particulate matter is removed from the gas stream followed by the SOx. The scrubbing media has high affinity for SOx without effecting the concentration of CO2 in the gas stream.

    The water recycling is an optional part of the system and is used when the gas stream contains high particulate matter concentration or temperature. The system will remove the impurities from the contaminated water and ensure clean recycled media for reuse.
